Tokyo Olympics: Finally Some Medal Hope For India After A Long Break!
Women Weight-lifter Mirabai Chanu made the whole nation proud by bringing the first medal in the form of a silver medal in the women’s weight lifting category. But after that, it has been almost a week since India has won any other medal. The nation is seeing heartbreaks every day. But wait! Unlike other days, someone has brought good news for the country.
We are talking about a women boxer from Northeast Lovlina Borgohain who has been entered in the semifinals of women boxing and has been assured a bronze medal at least. But for Lovlina Sky is the limit. She is seeing gold in a way Arjun saw bird’s eyes. After beating former world champion Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei, the morale of Lovlina is high.
Well, Japan is said to be the land of the rising sun. But it seems that for India it is proving the land of rising medals. Besides Lovlina, Badminton star PV Sindhu has also entered the Semi-finals of Women’s single badminton. This has given some hope that the silver medallists of the Rio Olympics can win another medal here.
North-eastern players are bringing happiness to the nation. First, it was Mirabai Chanu from Manipur and now Lovlina Borgohain from Assam has kept the hopes alive. Significantly, the five-time world champion and Olympic medallist Mary Kom has been knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics which is a huge heartbreak for the Indians but with Lovlina, fans are still hoping for the gold. After Mary Kom, Lovlina will be just the second women boxer from India to win a medal at the Olympics. Mary Kom won a bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012.
In this enthralling 69kg quarterfinal encounter, Lovlina showed her technical nous, superb game sense, and street smartness to prevail over her much-fancied opponent. It was a 4-1 split verdict in Lovlina’s favor. All three rounds went in her favor. Despite a late surge from her opponent, Lovlina had proved insurmountable.
Besides Boxing, the Indian Men Hockey team has beaten host Japan in their last league matches. Men in Blue have already qualified for the quarterfinals. India beat Japan by 5-3 to finish the group stage in the second spot. Indian Women’s hockey team has won their match against Ireland and has kept the hope of entering into quarterfinals alive. They need to win all the stage matches from here.
