Virat Kohli To Scoot T20i Captaincy After T-20 World Cup, What Are Big Takeaways From It?

The Indian skipper has put a stamp on all those rumors about his captaincy and has announced that he will pull his leg out as a T-20i captain after the completion of the ICC T-20 World Cup. After Virat’s announcement, there have been lots of discussions in the cricket chamber. Let’s find what are the big takeaways from the skipper’s decision.

Here you can see the ICC’s tweet on this,

Significantly, there were rumors about Virat leaving limited over cricket captaincy but Virat after his announcement on Thursday has cleared that he will step out from T-20i captaincy. He will keep captaining India in One-days and test format. Virat has been captaining India in all three formats of the game. He took over limited over the captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017. Although, he is leading the Men in blues in Tests since 2014.

If we look at Virat’s record as a captain in limited over cricket, it looks fine. Under his captaincy, India played ICC champions trophy final 2017, and semifinal of ICC World Cup 2019. If we talk about the numbers game, Kohli has led India in 45 matches. India has won 27 out of this with a win percentage of 65.11. Then what can be the reason behind Virat’s leaving captaincy? Let’s check out.

Reason 1. Workload Management

Since Virat is captaining India in all three formats, he has to play cricket accordingly. The concept of managing workload is not new in BCCI. We have seen that BCCI ensures the full rest of its top players and Virat is one of them. In past, Virat has missed many tournaments such as Asia Cup, Nidhas Trophy in 2018, and few bilateral series. 32-years aged Virat has been phenomenal with his fitness but still, it is important for BCCI to keep him fit for the 2023 world cup.

Reason 2. Missing ICC Trophies

Virat has always been targeted for not winning any ICC trophy for India. The captain has featured India in three tournaments knockouts including two finals, one at ICC champions Trophy and second at World Test Championship. India lost both games. If we talk about Virat’s captaincy in the longest format of the game, it is incredible. He is already India’s greatest test captain with 38 wins in 68 tests. After losing the WTC final, Kohli promised to get WTC 2 trophy for India. He has also not left the ODI captaincy. It’s a sign, he hasn’t given up hopes for the ICC trophy.

Reason 3. Rohit Sharma Taking Big Steps As Limited Over Captain

Everyone knows that Rohit Sharma is the best and obvious candidate for the post of captaincy after Virat in t-20is. Sharma’s record as a captain in the shortest format of the game is outstanding. Rohit has led India in 19 t-20is games with a win percentage of 78.94 and 15 wins. He has won the Asia cup and Nidhas Trophy for India. In IPL as well, he led Mumbai Indians to 5 titles whereas Virat’s RCB is still hunting for the one. There is no doubt that Rohit will march the team post T-20 World cup.
